The basics
What is Campaign Gremlin?
Campaign Gremlin is a narrative campaign manager for tabletop miniatures wargames. It takes the busywork of running a campaign off your plate, then helps you turn the games you play into an unfolding story.
- Invite your whole group with a single shareable link.
- Run a league's worth of battles and standings across a whole season.
- Players report their own results and bring in their own forces.
What games does it work with?
Any tabletop wargame. Campaign Gremlin is system-agnostic, so you bring the game and it fits around it: Warhammer 40,000, Bolt Action, Age of Sigmar, BattleTech, Necromunda, Trench Crusade, your own homebrew ruleset, anything you field. It does not enforce a system's rules. What it gives you instead are custom fields, so you can track whatever matters in your game and have it persist on a single unit, or across a whole force, as the campaign evolves. It also works with the campaign rules your game already has: if your system has a campaign or crusade rule set for developing forces over a series of battles, use it. You play by those rules at the table, and Campaign Gremlin keeps the record and turns the results into your story.
Campaign Gremlin does not provide, reproduce, or replace the official rules or rules text of any game system.

How is this different from other tabletop apps?
Two kinds of tool usually come up. Pairing apps exist to run tournaments: seed the players, pair the rounds, and crown a winner over a weekend. Other campaign managers are tied to a single game system. Campaign Gremlin does a different job. It is for narrative campaign play, in any system, at whatever pace your group likes. You create battles and assign them to your players and play them out over weeks or months, and the results grow into a season-long story. It is for groups who want the campaign itself to be every bit as memorable as the games on the table.
Running your campaign
Do I have to type in my whole army?
No. Paste your army list from any builder, or even drop in a screenshot, and the Gremlin reads it and turns it into a structured force, every unit pulled out and ready to review. Fix anything it missed, and you are set. You can also add units by hand whenever you like.
How does a battle work, start to finish?
You plan a battle, and if you want, the Gremlin offers a premise to frame it, a reason these forces are clashing. You play the game on your own table under your own rules, then report the result. You get a shared after-action account, written yourself or drafted by the Gremlin from both sides, and the outcome folds into each force's Arc. You also track how your forces and units change as the campaign goes on, their progression and their scars, using custom fields you define yourself. Across a season, all of it becomes your Chronicle.
Can I run a campaign with my whole gaming group?
Yes, and that is the heart of it. You are the GM. Your players join with an invite link, build and manage their own forces, and take part in the battles you set up. Everyone shares one campaign, one set of standings, and one unfolding story.
How many players fit, and what campaign sizes work best?
A single campaign holds up to six players on the Free tier, or up to twenty with a Supporter GM. Every battle is fought between two sides, and forces can band into teams of up to three a side. Inside those limits, a handful of shapes are the ones we have tested hardest and suggest:
- One-on-one: two forces, a rivalry that runs a whole season.
- Team battles: two-on-two or three-on-three, alliances of up to three forces a side.
- League seasons: up to twenty solo players, each battle a one-on-one, with standings that run the whole season.
Can I run team or alliance campaigns?
Yes. Forces can ally into teams of up to three, and each alliance gets its own identity: a name and a background built around the cause that binds them, all woven into the narrative. The Chronicle speaks of the alliances as blocs and tracks how the war between them turns. It fits leagues with a lot of players and teams of up to three forces a side; see the campaign sizes question above for the shapes we suggest.
The story you tell
What can the Gremlin draft for me?
From the facts you record, the Gremlin can draft any part of your campaign's story: a short, engaging premise to set up each battle (a hook to set the scene), a shared after-action account once you report a result, an evolving Saga and Arc for every force, Legends for the units that earn them, and the campaign-wide Chronicle. Write it yourself, or generate as much or as little as you like.
How much of the story do I write myself?
As much or as little as you like. You are always the author. Campaign Gremlin gives your campaign a narrative layer at every level: the Chronicle of the whole war, a Saga and Arc for each force, a Legend for a standout unit, a premise and after-action account for each battle. Write each one yourself, or ask the Gremlin to draft it from what actually happened at your table.
- You set the level of help. Write every word, hand the Gremlin a one-line steer, or let it draft the whole thing. Your call, every time.
- It is grounded in play. Whatever the Gremlin drafts is built from your real factions, the setting, the tone you chose, and who won which battle. It is not invented.
- You always have the last word. Every line is yours to keep, edit, rewrite, or delete.
Does the Gremlin decide who wins my battles?
Never. You play your games on the table and report the result yourself. The story is written around what happened, the premise going in and the after-action account coming out, and the Gremlin never has a vote in who won. It also stays out of the rules: it will not hand you mission objectives or stand in for your game's rulebook in any single battle. The tabletop stays entirely yours.
What are Sagas, Arcs, Legends, and the Chronicle?
They are the layers of your campaign's story. A force's Saga is its identity and origin, who they are and what they fight for. Its Arc is the running account of how its fortunes shift from battle to battle. A Legend is the tale of a single standout unit. The Chronicle is the grand, whole-campaign history that ties every force and battle together. Each one you can write yourself or generate from your real games, and every word is yours to edit.
What if I don't like what the Gremlin writes?
Everything the Gremlin generates is yours to edit or rewrite, and you can delete it outright. If a passage is almost there, regenerate it with a quick note on what to change and it will take another pass. Nothing is locked, and you always have the final word on your campaign's story.
Cost & getting help
Is it free? What are Gremlin Tokens?
Yes. The Free tier covers all the core campaign management: building forces, tracking units, planning and recording battles, the whole campaign timeline. Manual entry and editing don't use tokens. The Gremlin's narrative generation runs on monthly Gremlin Tokens (10 a month on Free). For more, the $7/month Supporter tier gives you 300 a month and lets you run more campaigns at once. Tokens reset on the 1st of each month and do not roll over.
Do my players have to pay?
No. Players join and play for free. If you (the GM) are a Supporter, your token pool funds narrative generation for the whole group: host pays, group plays. On the Free tier, each person draws from their own monthly tokens. Either way, nobody pays to take part in your campaign.
Why support the project?
Campaign Gremlin is built and run by one person, and Supporter subscriptions are what keep it alive. Your support covers the infrastructure the app runs on and keeps the Gremlin fed. Just as much, it tells the creator that a narrative campaign tool is worth building for the tabletop community, and it funds the time to keep shipping features and following the roadmap. Supporters get the larger token pool and more campaigns right now. Down the line, they will also get early looks at what is coming and a real voice in where the project heads next.
How do I get help or talk to you?
Campaign Gremlin is built by one person, and the door is open. Join the Discord to share feedback, ask questions, report bugs, or just talk campaigns. Everyone is welcome, Supporter or not. You can also email support@campaigngremlin.com and a real human (the one who built it) will get back to you.
